I am so stinkin excited and blessed to the max to tell you that I am the first guest artist for one of my most favorite projects in the history of projects! I am talking about The Documented Life Project (if you missed me gushing about it here or seeing the photos I have posted on FB or Instagram, just click on the links to see my love for this project)
If you are new to my blog, well, then welcome! My name is Stephanie Ackerman
and simply put, I LOVE to make things. alot. I have been blessed by God with creative talents and abilities and I am blessed to do what I love for a living teaching creative classes online, nationally and internationally. I am a wife to the first boy I fell in love with at 15 (and after 23 years of our own lives, we got married 7 years ago.) I am a mom of 2 boys and live in Orange County, CA (don't get me started on the Real Housewives thing...) I am glad that you found me and if you want, you can get to know a little about me here.
Enough of me, let's get to the weekly inspiration/challenge.
The Fab 5 gave me an assignment to "Add a flap to a flap" and well, since I have been adding flips and flaps to each week of my journal, I happily accepted the challenge! Now here is a little random tidbit about me. I sometimes over complicate simple things and refer to me and my style as "Simply Complicated." I did it with this challenge so you are going to see a little of my process here.
I grabbed my journal, a paper trimmer, corner rounder, a couple rolls of Washi tape, a tape measure and a kraft file folder (I have a weird love for file folders and kraft so when I discovered them, I bought a couple hundred). I measured the page and decided that my flap would have to be 4 1/2" x 8 1/4" FOLDED to fit nicely onto my journal page. I opened up my kraft file folder and laid it flat on the table with the "tab" on the right-hand side. Then I folded the right side of the file folder towards the center of the opened file and wouldn't ya know, it measured EXACTLY 4 1/4". I simply cut down the center of the file and had my 4 1/2"
I placed the trimmed piece lengthwise onto my trimmer and measured 8 1/4" and trimmed away:
then I "cornered the rounders" as I often say and got ready to use some washi tape to attach it to my journal page
You can decide which way you want your flap to flip open, and then simply attach the cut edge to your journal page (with the fold toward the inside of your journal)
Here is where the complicated part came in. I embellished my flap and the part that flips a few different ways and then....
I ripped off the flip part.
Yep.
I didn't like it and that is okay. It is only paper, plus I still had the flap to work with so please don't panic. I grabbed a extra large manila tag and covered it with my own painted art paper. I attached the straight edge of the tag to the top of my kraft flap (see top arrow)with washi tape and you can see remnants of the flip rip by looking at the lower left arrow. RIP little flip.
So here it is. A successful flap that flaps, whew!
Here is a look at what I put underneath the Manila tag that flips up. Once that was done, I sat and looked at my flap that flaps and knew it needed a little doodle so I grabbed my favorite Signo White Pigment Ink Pen and started adding circles and lines, used a black Sharpie to add a few more and adhered a big ol' heart to it.
Now, it is a flap that flaps and I love it just like I love this whole Documented Life Project! Thanks for stopping by and thanks to the fab five for the amazing invitation to be a guest!
p.s. since I can't seem to leave well enough alone, I added a little paint and a little more paper to brighten up my flap that flips and here is what it looks like now:
Thanks for visiting! Hope to see you again!
