Online Workshop "Bible Journaling & Lettering" Re-Release 2020

NOTE: This is not a brand new workshop. This workshop was released on November 2017.

Jumping for Joy in my Journaling Bible

This morning I opened up my Journaling Bible for the first time in a VERY LONG TIME.

It is not that I haven't been journaling and documenting my faith, but I thought I'd lost the love for doing it in my Journaling Bible.  I had been doodling, journaling, coloring and documenting for almost 4 straight years and along the way, I got tired of armwrestling with myself having to use the product as part of my Bible Journaling. NOTE: please do not misunderstand me. This has nothing to do with all of the great product out there, just my experience of how hard it was for me to stay aligned with the PURPOSE over the product.  I believe it is what is called marketing and well, if you have known me for any amount of time, I am a terrible marketing person when it comes to getting to buy something, especially when it is something that I have created. NOTE AGAIN: I am working on this.

Looking back and re-reading what I typed above,  I had the same exact experiences with ALL of the other creative endeavors I have been part of in the creative industry.  I just realized that right now as I typed.  In order for me to be and stay authentic in what I create, I have to be me. (psst...the same goes for you but you gotta get to that place.  I will continue to remind you, though)

Here is the good news and what I learned today: finding JOY has nothing to do with me and everything to do with WHO joy comes from.

gulp.

I mean, I know that, but I forgot to remember that. 

dang it.

That is why it is so important to write things down. 

Thats where the Journaling Bible comes in.  Long story short, I am re-learning about what JOY is (because apparently, I forgot) and things in my head and heart clicked this morning as I was doing my Bible study and homework. Part of the assignment was to look up a list of verses based on the word JOY. In the NIV translation, the word JOY comes up 218 times in 210 verses.  That is a LOT of JOY! I was just going to read a few and I just kept reading and reading and man was I reminded of what JOY really is and WHO is comes from.  

Thats when I got up, went and grabbed my Journaling Bible and as I opened it, was filled with JOY.  My heart jumped...no pun intended...for JOY. I went to Psalm 28:7, read it again and then in the margin, rewrote the verse in the NIV translation and then again in my moleskine journal...

and then, really, I thought, re-launch the old Bible Journaling & Lettering Online Workshop and mark it down.

so I did. (see, I am working on my marketing skills.) Please note this is the original workshop released a few years ago. The great things about it, it still applies today because it is NOT all about supplies and products.

Faith Journaling Monday

It dawned on me that you may not know that I have an online workshop always open for registration and instant access called Bible Journaling & Lettering Inside and Outside the Margins.  It came out in 2016 and then was going to retire but by demand (thank you!) the poor dude never got to retire. The content is always relevant so although the launch date is old, it may be brand new to you...and it is only $29.00. To check it out, you can click here or on the right side bar.

Okay, today lets talk about supplies. If you have "Faith Journaling For The Inspired Artist" turn to page 8.

I start it off with "You might very well already have what you need to get started" and it really is the truth. If you have access to a pencil, pen and some paper, you are ready. 

One of the most common "reasons" (aka excuses) people hesitate to start documenting their faith and/or Bible Journaling is because of supplies. You do not have to have a "Journaling Bible," the newest or most expensive set of watercolor paints, the latest set of clear stamps, fancy colored markers, stickers or dare I mention Washi Tape.  All of those are things will help you express what you want to journal and document but are not necessary to start.

IMPORTANT: If you find yourself "thinking you need" the right supplies before you can journal in your Bible, it might be time to readjust your thinking. Like I mentioned a few weeks ago, you can remind yourself of this by reading the reminder in the yellow box on page 19 & 25.  

There are three things I always have with me as "supplies" for documenting my faith:  A Papermate Sharpwriter Mechanical Pencil, a Uniball Signo 207 Micro pen (in black ink)  Zig Writer Marker (color: Platinum) and a white eraser. What you use those things on is your choice. It can be a planner, a binder, a post-it note, note card or even a scrap of paper. The important thing is that you write it down. What supplies you decide to use after that is up to you.

Here are several examples of what just using those 4 things looks like:

 

Take your time growing into this if you are just beginning to document your faith and beware of the "reasons" you are telling yourself why you are not starting....Just start. 

Faith Journaling Monday (on a Tuesday)

It's okay that it is Tuesday. This week I want to focus on the "Alternate Page" so grab your book and turn to page 20. ( in my book, Faith Journaling For The Inspired Artist)  Probably the number one reason people do not document their faith in the margins of a Journaling Bible is because of fear.  Fear that they won't like it or fear that they will mess up. 

Spoiler Alert: You are going to mess up AND you are not going to like everything that you do BUT you can't let fear rule your decisions, whether it is Bible Journaling or anything else. Here are a few common quotes I have heard from women and something that might make you think "Me, too!": "I have had my Journaling Bible for two years and I haven't started yet " I have had my Journaling Bible forever and I haven't even taken the plastic off of it."  When it comes to documenting your faith, the dang devil doesn't want you to do it so he is going to put all sorts of creative barriers in your way and thoughts in your mind so that you don't do it. 

Here's the good news: it's okay because I have a solution: The Alternate Page. 

It is simple:

Do your journaling, documenting and art on an alternate page and then do one of two things:

1. Use a strip of Washi Tape and add it right into the pages of your Bible.
2. Toss it and start over.

HOLD ON A SECOND: Let's talk about number two for a second. Are you focused more on what it looks like than what it is about???? Something to remember: Go to page 25 and read my thoughts in the yellow box titled: Things to Remember. 

Here is a quick look at an alternate page I did yesterday, on Faith Journaling Monday: Typically I buy a blank or lined Moleskin Journal and tear the pages from there to use as my alternate pages.  The paper weight and color are similar to the "onion skin" pages in a Bible.

BEFORE you start, hold your blank page to the actual Bible page and compare sizes. Pencil in trim marks and trim page to size either before or after you are done. 

1. Pencil in what you want to write. 
2. I always use a Uniball Signo 207 Micro Black pen to go over and around my pencil lines.  Let the ink set and dry and then erase pencil marks.
3. Do your designs, shadows, mark marking, stamping, water coloring and anything else you want to do to add to your page. 

Once you are done, add a strip of Washi Tape to the edge of your page: NOTE: place 1/2 of the Washi Tape on your page and leave the other 1/2 to adhere to the Bible page. GENTLY place your page into the crease of the two open pages of the Bible and there you go!

 Q: What is Documented Faith?

A: It is a creative way to record, illustrate, document, journal and doodle the everyday moments, Bible verses, inspirational quotes and a growing relationship with Jesus and with others in a planner, binder, art journal, notebook, on a post it note or inside and outside the margins of a Journaling Bible. However, with whatever and on whatever you have or want.

No rules.  It a personal journey that is between you and Jesus and whoever you want to share it with.

Q: Why Document My Faith?
A: To develop the habit of spending time reflecting, reading, worshiping, learning and memorizing God’s word in a creative way.

Q: How Do I start with Documented Faith?

The Core Purpose of Documented Faith

 

It is not about religion. It is about a personal relationship with Jesus.

Documented Faith Week Four

If you are following along with Documented Faith then you know that there is one focus word per month along with verses for each week that coordinate with the verse.  You can get the weekly verses right here  and they are posted once a week, usually late Friday or Saturday morning.  

Each month of the year we also focus on a specific word.  The first word for 2017 is MOVE.

Along with the Facebook group postings, emails, and Documented Faith page posts, I am also going to post right here where you are reading, about how I document and/or illustrated the weeks verse as inspiration and encouragement for you.  How YOU documented your faith is totally up to you and is PERSONAL so please do not ever feel that you have to do it and then post it to Facebook, put a hashtag on it on Instagram or anything else for that matter.  However you want to do it is your decision...which goes for me as well.  

This gives us freedom to sometimes be in the margin of a Journaling Bible, on a sheet of paper that I may add into my existing planner system, a little something jotted on a PostIt ( I LOVE post-it notes) and/or some weeks on 3 x 5 cards. There is no wrong or right way to document or illustrate your faith. The important thing is that you do it and that you work on creating a habit of doing it.

Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.  Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings. 1 Peter 5:7-9 NIV

 

Note To Self: Carrying all of your worries, stress and daily struggles by yourself shows that you have not trusted God fully with your life. Letting God have your anxieties calls for action.  Do not submit to circumstances but to the Lord who controls them.

Notes To Self and Reminders

The past few weeks have been very similar to a circus in our lives, or at least the circus music has been cue'd up and playing CONSTANTLY in the background. Sound familar?

Note To Self: I am not a fan of the circus. 

Things have been up and down and all over the place, TRYING to be patient with this, patient with that, jumping through hoops, falling down, getting up, tripping over things, traveling and coming home, traveling again and then coming home and a whole bunch of this,that and the other.  

We all have crap going on and really, all of my junk and details are not important to share (although I bet you are wondering what the heck I am talking about, huh??)  What is important are the reminders and I am here to remind you (well, and really me) that NO MATTER WHAT...everthing works out the way it is supposed to work out.  The problem is, when things don't work out the way we think or thought they would or should, we temporaily fall apart. (well, at least I do.  You can admit that in the privacy of your own home) We forget what we tell ourselves when everything is in the air, in process...until things dont go the way we had planned, "That everything will go the way it is supposed to"

Note To Self: It is not about our plan..dang it! Another thing we forget to remember. 

 

When you find yourself in that moment where things not coming together the way you thought they should, when you feel like prayers are not anwered the way you think they should or if and when you find yourself woozy from the motion sickness of going in circles, falling down, jumping through hoops and all the other junk that comes when your plans fall apart, there is good news to remember:

There is something way bigger, better and brighter than you could have ever imagined. Its the truth and it is a promise. You have gotta hold onto that truth as hard as it may seem at the moment.  Cry about it for a little bit and then get up, brush off, use the middle finger emojii to flip off the devil and then keep going. 

p.s. All of the above it exactly how I document my faith.  I write it all down so that when the better happens, you know, HIS plan, I can look back and connect all the dots.

Yes, I Still Journal In My Bible

Inquiring minds want to know if I still journal in my Bible even though I often share and remind others that you don't have to journal in the margin of your Bible and the answer is YES, I still journal in my Bible.  In fact, just yesterday I posted Week 44 of my Documented Faith Workshop here: http://homegrownhospitality.typepad.com/df/
and walked you through what I did and linked a download so that you can too! In fact, I am working on some pretty super awesome stuff for 2016 and am sorta spilling the beans when I tell you that if you are in the Northern California area, San Jose to be exact, I will be having a MONTHLY Documented Faith Bible Journaling workshop at A Work Of Heart Studio.  Now don't get all crazy and call Andrea to get all the details right now because 1. it is 6:52 am on a Sunday morning and 2, She doesn't even know that I am posting about this yet.  WE are still finalizing all of the details.

I just want to let you know that yes, I still journal in my Bible and that I am working DAILY on a project/program so that YOU can too, wherever in the world you may be!

The Habit of Bible Journaling

You might get tired of hearing me say this but if you want to jump into Bible Journaling but are not ready to put your paintbrush or pen down on the page of a Bible, don't.

Use a journal, a pad of paper, a Project Life card, a Composition Book, whatever you are most comfortable creating in and when I say "creating," don't feel like you have to use watercolors, stickers, markers or paint.  The most important habit that you want to create is spending time reading and learning.  I believe that once that habit is formed, the rest will follow. 

Personally, I spend my time EARLY in the morning.  This was where I sat early in the morning in Florida and no pun intended, it was heavenly. 
You might get tired of hearing me say this too but when I give God the first part of my time, He provides the time I need to get the things done that I NEED to get done. Does it mean I have to get up a bit earlier, yes, but for me, that works. 

If you really want to develop a habit of Bible Journaling or just simply spending time being quiet, do it. Don't just say "I really want to" or "I really should." Just do it and see what happens...

Bible Journaling & Lettering Online Workshop

I will be starting to teach Bible Journaling & Lettering in-store beginning next week at Right@Home Scrapbooking in Boston and a few weeks after at WhimSoDoodle in Florida (with more in-store dates released soon) BUT..I am also going to release a similar version ONLINE on June 1, 2015

Here is the information for the ONLINE workshop:

• Bible Journaling & Lettering Inside & Outside the Margins is a self paced online workshop.  Once you register, the content is all yours and you can work on it all at once or a little at a time whenever you want, wherever you are in the world.
• Supplies - the supplies are pretty simple and chances are you may already have what you need.  If you want to use what I am using, a list of links will be provided the moment you register so that you will be all ready to start on June 1st.
• Content - All of the content will be loaded into the classroom and ready for you to begin June 1st. Again, this is a self-paced workshop.  There are 10 step-by-step videos on the "How, What & Why of Bible Journaling, basic lettering, doodling, basic coloring using watercolors in and out of the margins, downloads of traceables and worksheets, photos, challenges and encouragement.
  

There is a tie for the #1 most asked question: "Do you have to do it in a bible/What if I don't have a Journaling Bible?? and here is my answer:

"The purpose of this workshop is two-fold.  The first and most important part is to get deeper into the word so whether you create in a 2" margin of the Bible, in a journal, a planner, on a Project Life card, in your scrapbooking or on a plain ol' piece of paper, the key is that you are learning something or reminding yourself of something you might already know, just forgot to remember..."
